Tom Kells

Biographical Sketch

Tom is an original New Yorker whose passion for photography began at age 11 when he built his first enlarger using an old bellows camera.

Following completion of undergraduate work in 1965, he attended the Germain School of Photography in New York City. He entered the photographic field when he was hired by Berkey Technical Companies, the US importer for many of today's major photographic manufacturers.

As a college graduate at draft age, he chose to attend Infantry OCS after receiving his draft notice in 1966. He served tours in the United States as well as Vietnam and Korea as an Intelligence Officer and Army Aviator. In 1983 he was assigned to Fort McPherson, Atlanta, and eventually settled in Marietta with his wife and three children following military retirement in 1986.

It was in 2004 with strong encouragement by people in the art and design field that he decided to return to his true passion for photography. His first formal show was in 2004 consisting of thirty-six images displayed at Neiman Marcus, Lenox Mall. He has also displayed work at Kennesaw State University and in shops and restaurants in the Atlanta area. Commercially he is represented by five major design firms in Atlanta and has done photographic work for Bryn Alan and the Marietta Daily Journal/Cobb Life. All photography at the new Elevation Restaurant, McCollum Field, Kennesaw, is his.

As a member of the Atlanta Photography Group (APG), his images were selected by Fay Gold and Jane Jackson in juried competitions that were displayed at the APG Gallery, Tula Art Center. In June 2005, the Marietta Daily Journal published a full page article about his return to fine art photography.

He believes digital rivals film now, but feels both digital and film capture are important. He has now self-published five books used to represent his work and is working on a sixth.
