Biographical Sketch

Jack Smith is a native Georgian, born in Washington County in 1925. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II in the Pacific. Mr. Smith completed formal studies in commercial art in Chicago before moving to Atlanta in 1949. Along with three other artists, he formed one of the first commercial art studios in Atlanta. He was Art Director for Williams Printing Company from 1979-1989. Mr. Smith was a charter member of the Atlanta Art Director's Club, as well as the Professional Artist's Association of Atlanta.

Jack has been strongly influenced by the Impressionists, both French and American. He paints with a palette, using a brush on rare occasions. He enjoys painting scenes that include water, marshes, or the coastline. Painting on location has always been a joy for Jack, but he can no longer do so due to physical limitations.

Mr. Smith has exhibited his work in galleries from the North Georgia mountains, to the South Georgia coast, including Tallulah Falls Gallery, Cathreen's Gallery in Atlanta, and Freidman's Gallery in Savannah. Many of Mr. Smith's paintings can be found hanging in North Atlanta homes of distinction. His love for his outdoor subjects shines through in his paintings, creating a wonderful sense of time and place while capturing the essence of the locations he has visited.
